Connolly, T.W.J. (1857). History of the Royal Sappers and Miners, from the formation of the Corps in March 1772, to the date when Its Designation was Changed to that of Royal Engineers, in October 1856. London: Longman et al. 2nd revised edition. 2 volumes. Vol 1, 496 + xxiv pp, vol 2, 573 + xiii pp. Hardback, red cloth-covered embossed boards with gilt lettering and design to spine. Covers very worn and bumped with splitting of fabric at heads and base of spine with minor loss. Dark blue end papers, text untrimmed and occasionally page gatherings are uncut, age toned with minor foxing to figure plates and protective tissue.  Previous owner’s signature and address inside covers. Vol 1 cover detached and vol 2’s nearly so. Front free end-paper missing from vol 1. One plate missing from volume 2. Cover in poor condition, text in good condition, overall fair condition.

The sappers, later the Royal Engineers assisted the Ordnance Survey with the primary triangulation of the British Isles. The revision of this second edition is entirely a substantial account of the then recently won Crimean War.
