Memoirs of the Geological Survey of GB, v3, 1881. London: Longman et al. 2nd edition, 611 + 27 plates at back of which 1 is a foldout hand-coloured horizontal section, and 26 are fossil plates (there are 26 fossil plates listed and shown, but there is a gap between the last fossil plate, no. 26, and the horizontal section, plate 28). A frontispiece (un-numbered) is a fold out hand-coloured map, Index Map of the Geology of Wales and its neighbourhood, (43 x 46cm) at 1:633,600 (1” =10mi). Hardback, in Survey’s embossed original greenish brown cloth covers with gilt lettering and Survey crest. Considerable shelf wear with bumped corners and fraying at top and base of spine and tears down front hinge. The binding of the pages is sound, but the hinges are loose. Calling card of WW Watts pasted on front free endpaper. Institutional library plate and stamps to front free endpaper and back of title page. Pages clean but age-toned. Light mottling/foxing to some fossil plates. Foldout section and frontispiece are detached and very foxed; reverse of section has signature of WW Watts in pencil. This memoir is devoted solely to Welsh geology. With ‘The Geology of North Wales’ (pp1-330) by Andrew C Ramsay considerably expanded from the first edition. The original appendix, ‘On the Fossils of North Wales’ by JW Salter was greatly expanded and re-arranged by Robert Etheridge (pp331-611). Cover in poor to fair condition. Text and fossil plates in fair to good condition.
