Maps of Ireland - 1 inch

The Geological Survey of Ireland was completed by 1890 prior to Independence and the division of Ireland and before Great Britain. There was no change to the layout or introduction of new layouts in either the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland, although there were two surveys that did the revisions and published separately. The new 1:100,000 geological maps are also to a common new layout and numbering system although we have none in our stock. The Survey maps were available as uncoloured engravings as well as hand-coloured engravings. The coloured maps cost about 4x the uncoloured maps. This was the practice also in England and Wales, and Scotland prior to the advent of colour printing in Great Britain in 1901. In my map collecting, I have observed that it is very unusual to find an uncoloured geological survey map of England and Wales or Scotland, and when I do there is often a brutal 'Uncoloured Map' stamp on it. In Ireland uncoloured maps are much more common than uncoloured maps. This may reflect the poverty of nineteenth century Ireland and the thrift of Irish geologists.

For those skilled in water-colouring, the uncoloured maps present an opportunity. For guidance, all the nineteenth century geological maps of Ireland are shown in considerable detail and in colour at this website

The layout is shown on the index map which may be opened with the button below. It shows the sheet numbering and locations for the one inch to one-mile (1:63,360) geological maps of Ireland. The layout and numbering did not change from the outset of geological mapping in 1853 until the replacement of the one inch series by the 1:100,000 series beginning in the 1990s. There was no Old and New Series as in England and Wales.
