Description
General Sketch of the Physical and Geographical Features of India (1854) GB Greenough. Scale not given, but approx 1:2,000,000. Date not on map, but water marks vary between 1851 and 1854. ‘Engraved on stone’ by A. Petermann. 6 of 9 sheets covering Northern 75% of India including modern Pakistan, Bangladesh, part of Burma. Hand-coloured engraved maps, each flat sheet 60x72cm untrimmed, with engraved area 49x56cm. Maps clean and bright. Bottom edge of all sheets have minor marginal tears not affecting map area, otherwise all sheets are in very good to fine condition. Included scans on memory stick of creased library copies of the 3 missing sheets cover of Peninsular India and Ceylon; the legend, title block and fossil lists occupy the mainly sea area of the southeast and southwest sheets. Original paper sleeve with title on label included, complete but badly torn.
This first geological map of India was compiled by Greenough from the responses to his lengthy questionnaire and annotated maps provided by surveyors of the Indian Army and the East India Company. The map includes numerous notes from these anonymous contributors. When he was 76, Greenough sailed to the east intending to link his Indian research with the geology of Europe, but died in Naples, probably of a heart attack. He is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery, a mile to the north of us.
