Maps of Netherlands - survey

The first series 1:50,000 geological maps each cover a relatively small area of 13x20km approximately. The map s are 42.5x52cm and the actual map area is only 26x41cm with a section below the map. The index map of the layout shows all maps are quarters of a numbered larger rectangle: I is NW; II is NE, III is SW and IV is SE. The small map size together with the bright colouring makes these maps very attractive for framing.. These maps are in very good condition with only a pencil note of a library location in the upper left corner, unless otherwise noted. All are from the first half of the 20th century on older base maps. Adjacent areas of Germany and Belgium, while not coloured geologically, have full topographic detail in black or grey outline.
The detail is incredible for those used to mapping the Holocene and Pleistocene in at most 2 or 3 colours; the topographic detail is very fine as well. In marine areas, off-shore contours at 5m intervals are given for northern coastal waters, but not for Ijselmeer / Zuiderzee or the river outlets of the south. For the geologist, the use of colours such as bright red, which conventionally depicts granitic bedrock in other countries, seems at first strange. But for Dutch geologists there are not enough colours in the conventional geological legend to map the many distinctions they make in Recent deposits.
