Fitton, William. Articles published in the Edinburgh Review 1817-1849. A sammelband volume of William Fitton’s published papers with his manuscript dedication to ‘Maria Fitton – from her father’ in October 1856. HB, original dark green leather binding with embossed boards and gilt lettering to spine and dentelle edging, with marbled end papers. Cover has moderate wear to top of spine and hinges and bumped corners. The hinges are sound. The text is clean apart from a library stamp on the main title page and manuscript notations tracing provenance, given below. All paste downs are absolutely neat and clean. In good to very good condition.

Constructed from offprints, with specially printed table of contents, each article has its own title page with title paste-down, text from preceding or following articles in original Reviews is covered with blank paste-downs throughout. Eight papers, of which six geological reviews: of the Transactions of the Geological Society (25pp), William Smith’s map (28pp), Buckland’s Reliquiae Diluvianae (41pp), Lyell’s Elements of Geology related to Hutton’s Theory of the Earth (61pp), Murchison’s The Silurian System (42pp), and Richard C Taylor’s Statistics of Coal (23pp). This volume was donated by T.Sheppard in 1924 to the Geological Society which sold it at auction in 1974 to a major American collector, H.Stanton Hill whose distinctive bookplate overlies the GS library rules.
