Sheets 36, 37, 41, 42, Old Series. South Wales, c. 1850s. One inch to the mile
Sheets 36, 37, 41, 42, Old Series. South Wales, c. 1850s. One inch to the mile (1:63,360) scale map covering south coast of Wales from Llanelli to Cardiff, including the Gower Peninsula, and north to Cardigan Bay in the northwest to Hay on Wye in the northeast, including the South Wales Coalfield. Hand coloured, cut and mounted on linen to fold and fit in original sleeve. Full extent is 122 x 186cm folding to 31 x 18.5cm. Of the joined sheets, 36 ,37, 41 were full folio sheets while sheet 42 was published as 4 separate quarters. The adjoining margins were trimmed in the assembly. The bottom margin records the dates of the topographic base maps – 1830 and 1833 – but the geological survey information was omitted as generally occurred on the first edition sheets in Wales and SW England. Likewise, the geological legend was omitted. A colour laser copy of the appropriate legend will be provided. The maps are all in very good condition. Water stains along some folds of the linen backing do not show through to the maps. The sleeve is torn at the top and bottom right hand corners but otherwise is in remarkably good condition. Gilt lettering on leather labels on front of sleeve and on left side so as to read when shelved like a book. The component maps would sell for over £400 as separate complete sheets. The map because of its large extent as seven joined up sheets with some loss of marginal information it is therefore selling for less.
