France, 1841, first geological map of all France
France, 1841. Dufrenoy, PA and de Beaumont, E, Tableau d’Assemblage des six feuilles de la Carte de la France. Colour lithograph, 57.5 x 54.5 cm. 1:2,000,000, a reduced single sheet from the original 1:500,000 six sheet first geological map of France published in the same year. Dissected and mounted on linen folding to 15 x 10 cm in original card sleeve. On its back, the map has the signatures or name-stamps of a succession of five owners dating from 1855 to 2004, the last being the famous (in mapaholic circles) cartobibliographer, Rodney Shirley. The map is very slightly mottled but otherwise shows little sign of wear. It is in very good condition, having been protected by the sleeve which is worn on all edges and bumped on all corners but is solid and intact and in fair to good condition.
