Aikin, Arthur, 1797. Journal of a Tour through North Wales and part of Shropshire; with Observations in Mineralogy, and other branches of Natural History. London: J. Johnson. 1st and only edition, 231pp. + fold-out figure. Hardback, 19 x 13cm, early leather rebinding in very good condition retaining original worn marbled paper-covered boards. Unidentified family coat of arms bookplate and two owner signatures; both are Aikins but I was not able to confirm the relationship to the author. The text is clean and in fine condition. The fold out figure of three panoramic views relating ridge form to lithology - a very early instance of geomorphological interpretation. The figure is lightly foxed throughout. Aikin frequently described the rock types at many village and other locations and praised the utility of the then nearly current 1794 map by John Evans (at 1”=1.3 miles) which he used, but unfortunately did not produce a map of his observations. In very good condition. Rare.
