A Map of the Country ‘round Scarborough in the North & East Ridings of Yorkshire, from actual Trigonometrical Surveys with Topographical, Geological and Antiquarian Descriptions by Robert Knox of Scarborough, 1849. Originally published in 1821 republished with additions in 1849. Scale 1:63,360 (1in=1mi) 65 x 60cm (25.5 x 23.5in). Printed for the author and inserted folded in Knox, 1855 Descriptions Geological, Topographical and Antiquarian in East Yorkshire. Uncoloured engraving. Despite the title, geological boundaries, legend and annotations are absent. The main addition in 1849 is a curving coastal section paralleling the coast which names and gives heights of cliffs and inland hills. The 1821 version of this map was coloured geologically by William Smith and donated by him to the Geological Society of London in 1831 on the occasion of its award to him of the first Wollaston Medal. Small tears at intersections of fold, otherwise in good to very good condition. With book.
