Harwich, Essex - Cliff Section, 1730. Hand-coloured engraving of cliff with description of strata with view of harbour, plate 8 from The History and Antiquities of Harwich and Dovercourt, Topographical, Dynastical and Political by Samuel Dale. 22 x 32.5cm, clear plate impression 20.7 x 27cm, two folds, age-toned, very slightly soiled. In good condition. Shows to gentlemen at cliff, one holding a fossil and pointing to the source stratum. Caption describes “Strata of Sand, Gravel, Fossil-Shells, and their diverse fragments. Stratum of Blewish Clay divers feet deep”, etc. Together with photocopy of title page, and extract of 1832 description from Observations on the Cliffs in the neighbourhood of Harwich, made in December 1832, by James Mitchell from Notices and Extracts from the Minute-Book of the Geological Society, in Transactions of the Geological Society, series 2: vol 5, p.259
