Savage, James. 1830. History of the Hundred of Carhampton, in the County of Somerset. Publ. Wm Strong, Bristol. 662pp. Hardback, 26.5 x 17.5 cm, early green cloth half-binding of grey paper-covered boards with green cloth binding. Text generally clean, age-toned with very occasional light foxing, except frontispiece, title and dedication which are foxed to very foxed. Fold out ‘A Geological Map of the Hundred of Carstairs’, 27.5 x 40 cm, one inch to the mile. Hand-coloured, age-toned, lightly foxed and, along exposed edges, soiled. Tear into the map at binding edge where binding tab ends above map fold, a common problem with bound in maps. Date on map is 1829. This one inch mapping predates the Geological Survey. It covers the coast of Somerset from Carhampton, east of Dunster to the border with Devon Surprisingly, considering the quality of the map, there is no section on and negligible mention of geology; no geologist is acknowledged although the surveyor – Wm Collard Cox, is. Map and book are in fair to good condition.
