Vesuvius (1757). Le Monte Vésuve; Peint par Lacroix et Gravé par Lemire. No date on figure. Engraving, 35.5 x 43.5cm, trimmed to plate mark. Age-toned, faint foxing, traces of former mountboard glued to margin. Good detail but low contrast. Although there is not date on the engraving, it is nearly identical to an engraving in Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopedie, Mineralogie, volcans, pl.1. Recorded in lower left margin as painted on the spot by Lacroix (of Marseille). Auction notes for the original oil painting note it was signed and dated 1758 on the back. The engraver, Noel Lemire, lived from 1724 to 1801. Nearly identical except for some foreground figures. From Johnson Lavis’s collection of 1880s. In fair to good condition.
