Bauerman (1835-1909) was in the first intake of the School of Mines in Jermyn Street in 1851 and went on to work as a Geological Survey geologist, then a widely travelled consultant, before becoming a lecturer in metallurgy in Sheffield and the Ordnance College, Woolwich. The 9^th edition of EB is known as the most scholarly.
