Memoirs of the Geological Survey of GB, v2, pt2, 1848. London: Longman et al. 381pp + 22 plates at back of which 4 are maps, 4 are fold-out ore-processing plant diagrams and 14 are fossil plates. Hardback, rebound in Survey’s embossed blue cloth covers with original greenish brown spine glued on, gilt lettering and Survey crest. Considerable shelf wear with bumped corners and tearing at top and fraying at the base of spine, but binding sound. Ex-library with label to front endpaper and stamp on back of title page. Pages clean with light age-toning apart from last two fossil plates which are foxed. Of the eleven papers, the major articles are: Dr. Hooker, On the Vegetation of the Carboniferous Period, as compared with that of the present day (pp387-430); Henry De la Beche and Lyon Playfair, First Report on the Coals suited to the Steam Navy (pp539-630; Robert Hunt, Notices on the History of the Lead Mines of Cardiganshire (pp635-654); and Warington W Smyth, On the Mining District of Cardiganshire and Montgomeryshire (pp655-684).
