Quarto format (27.5 x 18 cm), original half calf cloth boards with gilt title with early rebacked leather spine with gilt lettering. 24 text pages +19 colour printed map plates, each on stub to spine so that they lie flat when the atlas is open. Text preceding map plates is foxed, but map plates are clean and bright. Front corners bumped, and moderate shelf wear. Front and rear end papers advertise other Blackwood publications and Johnston maps. An 1864 advertising insert, Index Geographicus, has an speciment page of ithe ndex to Johnston’s Royal Atlas. This school atlas is the reduced and generalised version of Johnston’s great 1848 The Physical Atlas, A Series of Maps and Notes Illustrating the Geographical Distribution of Natural Phenomena. Includes geological maps of the British Isles and the World. Maps in very good condition.,text in fair to good condition
