Horizontal Section No.   93 (1873). From N end of Saddleworth Valley, on the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire, across the Penine Anticlinal and Yorkshire Coalfield by Meltham, Honley, Farnley Tyas, Kirkburton, Flockton Moor, Heath near Wakefield, Sharlston, and Syndale to N of Pontefract. Geological Survey of GB. 1st edition. Located on Old Series one-inch maps 88sw, se & ne, and 87nw.  Hand-coloured engraving, 72.5 x 103.5cm, 1:10,560 scale (6”= 1mile). Flat, linen-taped edges, age-toned, slightly soiled. Top edge was crumpled, now flattened with creases. Old tears neatly repaired. Library stamp on back. (coloured 1922). In fair to good condition.

These hand-coloured engraved ‘horizontal’ sections at six inch to one mile scale were published in the mid 19th century by the Geological Survey of England and Wales. The detailed profiles generally follow the geological dip on the one inch Old Series maps numbered in the upper right hand margin and the  profile locations are shown on these maps which themselves did not include a section.
