Sheet  22, 23, 24 and 25 Old Series 1" as a set. c1850. Dorset / Devon / Cornwall. Hand-coloured engravings, dissected, mounted on linen and folded between grey card covers for or by a John Widdicombe. Topographic date 1809, watermarks on 3 of 4 sheets 1850. Legend absent as typical of earliest geological maps in West country. All covers have neat hand-written list of place names on particular map. All trimmed close to border. Sheets 22 and 25 are complete 63.5 x 94cm. Sheet 23, 42.5 x 80.5cm and sheet 24, 42.5 x 93.5cm have been reduced to cut out extensive sea areas along south coast, borders have been transferred so skilfully that the surgery is almost unnoticeable. The set covers the south coast from Lyme Regis to Looe and inland to include most of Dartmoor and the east edge of Bodmin Moor. All sheets immaculate and bright and in very good to fine condition.
