Wyld, James (mid 1870s). [Geological] Map of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. London: James Wyld. Scale 1: 2,280,000 approx. (1 inch = c.36 miles) . Hand coloured engraving, 55 x 43cm, dissected and mounted on linen folding to 18.5 x 10.5cm between marbled card covers and fitting green cloth-covered slip case with soiled James Wild label. The map has a clear plate mark and is age-toned, but the colours are clear and bright. Inset map of the Shetland Isles is in upper left corner. France is not coloured. The date is based on the census figures listed in the lower left corner, the last being 1871. Below the cartouche are listed three addresses. He left 457 Strand in 1883, which puts an upper limit on the publication date, but the absence of census data for 1881 is probably more significant. See British Map Engravers,p.743. The slip case is worn at the corners, but sound. In good to very good condition
