Lowry, Joseph Wilson. 1853. Tabular view of Characteristic British Fossils, Stratigraphically Arranged. Re-issued by James Tennant, 149 Strand, London c.1861. Four folding-out panels of fossil illustrations with hand-coloured stratigraphic column on left. Each panel is dissected and mounted on linen to fold. All bound in book-style, brown cloth-covered folder, 26 x 19.5cm with paper label to which was added Tennant’s name and address. Bound in at back are two articles from Society of Arts, on the sculptural treatment of granite surfaces, 1860, and on the water supply of London, 1861, together with two mineralogy and geology examination papers, 1860. The bound illustrations and articles are detached from the cover. The cover is faded and worn particularly along the folded spine. Actual shelf wear is minor. All paper surfaces clean although age-toned. Foxing of linen backing does not transfer through. Only six institutional copies of Tennant’s re-issue are recorded. In good condition.
