Hardback, original brown leather binding with marbled paper-covered boards with gilt lettering to spine. Dedicated ‘To the Royal Society of Edinburgh from the Author’ on the half title page. Shelf worn and bumped, leather cracked (dessication rather than wear) on hinges which remain sound.
Library stamps inside front cover (with initialled withdrawn line through) and on title page. Bookseller/Library annotation on front endpapers and on title page. Foxed end papers, half title and title pages and prologue pages, then only faintly and occasionally foxing through through the rest of the text, but not fold-out maps . Foldout ‘Carte Géologique de l’Écosse’ at rear, 28.5 x 21cm. Approx. scale 1:2,250,000, side margins closely trimmed, lightly foxed. All in good condition.
The date of publication is not printed in the text. The publisher worked at the given address from 1820 to 1824. There were no later 19th century editions.
