Complete set of 9 hand-coloured maps each 53.5 x 62cm dissected and mounted on linen folding to 31 x 27cm. Maps age-toned but clean, colours bright, contemporary linen-taped edges, neglible wear. Sheet 1 dusty on reverse only where it may have extended from a shelf set. Red diamonds on reverse, indicate intended folding. Pencil sheet number above ‘front’ diamond on seven of the sheets. All in very good condition.
The title and legend are on sheet 7 which is signed in the lower left corner of map ‘An Dumont’ and which has minor amendments to the legend. There is no date on the map, but as it is signed it is a first edition. This was presented in 1849 to the Royal Academy but published for distribution in 1853. Later issues show the geology of neighbouring countries, which this map does not.
