Atlas, 1861. Johnston, AK, A School Atlas of Physical Geography, Wm Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London. Quarto format (27.5 x 18 cm), original half calf cloth boards with gilt title with early rebacked leather spine with gilt lettering. 19 colour printed plates, each on stub to spine so that they lie flat when the atlas is open. Text preceding map plates is slightly mottled brown, but plates are clean and bright. Front corners bumped, otherwise only light shelf wear. Front and rear end papers advertise other Blackwood publications and Johnston maps. An 1864 advertising insert, Index Geographicus, has an example page of index to Johnston’s Royal Atlas. This school atlas is the reduced and generalised version of Johnston’s great 1848 The Physical Atlas, A Series of Maps and Notes Illustrating the Geographical Distribution of Natural Phenomena. Includes geological maps of the British Isles and the World.
