Spine rebacked with original title spine retained, with cloth backing visible at top and on hinges near top and base of spine, but binding is sound. Corners bumped, otherwise, negligible shelf wear. Front endpapers have library book plate and stamps, and are split at hinge. Blindstamp on title page, double frontispiece of six chromolithographed skyscapes, ‘Twilight and afterglow effects at Chelsea, London, Nov 26th 1883’ (one month after eruption). 1 other colour lithograph, 39 b/w plates (23 folding) of maps and graphs of pumice travel, tidal waves, sound effects. Text age-toned, but clean, unmarked. A major scientific analysis of a supervolcanic eruption. Rare. In good condition.
